Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly meme created by Heidi at Rainy Day Ramblings in order to discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging (and some slightly more personal matters throw in for good measure). After Heidi stopped blogging (apparently for good), five of us took over as hosts while providing new questions.
The current team is composed of Berls at Because Reading Is Better Than Real Life,
Jen at That's What I'm Talking About,
Karen at For What It's Worth,
Linda at Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell and
Roberta at Offbeat YA. This week's question is... This time I'm doing a partial round-up of the last month's worth of questions, because I hate how I've been M.I.A. when it comes to the meme! (I'll tackle the last February question on its own on the appointed day).
January-February Round-Up
+ Question of the Day:
ARE THERE ANY BOOKS YOU'VE READ THAT CHANGED YOUR PERSPECTIVE ON A SUBJECT?
- January 6th: What are your blogging/reading goals for the new year?
As I wrote in my 2025 wrap-up: post weekly (or better, produce one post per week, which isn't the same) and incorporate more backlist books into review schedule. As for the reading part, I never set any goal because I want to do things at a leisurely pace.
- January 13th: What's a food you're obsessed with?
Obsessed? None. But I can't go without pasta for more than a couple of days, I like seafood a lot, and I use garlic freely if that counts 😁. I'm also a yoghurt lover, but since I was diagnosed as lactose intolerant, I'm down to three flavours (no brand seem to manufacture the other six I used to eat in the lactose-free version), apart from when I make a rare exception and go back to normal yoghurt...
- January 20th: What are your favorite snow/winter-themed books?
I don't read seasonal books, so I don't have any...sorry!
- January 27th: What's your favorite decade and why? (You do not need to have lived through it!)
The '70s had the best music, no question. But I was a teen in the '80s, and I'll forever miss their colourful, sparkly fabrics and fanciful attires (minus the shoulder pads 😂), and perms that actually did their job...(...well, I didn't have problems with those until ten years ago or so, but still). And that sense that everything was possible, you know, because the future was bright and everything you needed was at your fingertips. And the music, maybe it wasn't always at the same level as the previous decade's, but there was actual joy in it, and you just felt like dancing for no reason...
- February 3rd: If you could invent a holiday, what would you celebrate?
I'm drawing a blank here. Blogger holiday? LOL.
- February 10th: Share some romance book recommendations
See wintery books above...you all know romance isn't my jam.
- February 17th: Are there any books you've read that changed your perspective on a subject?
Not exactly...I tend to read books that align with my beliefs and perspective, and anyway, I'll admit that I don't read to educate myself - I need the escape, dammit. But books have helped me understand better certain categories whose lives are very different than mine, like non-binary/genderfluid people.
Well, that's it for now. Did you enjoy this post?
Would you like to participate in the meme on a regular or semi-regular basis, and get emailed the prompt list? Just head over here and fill in Jen's form! (Of course, you can jump in anytime you like - you are under no obligation to actually do all the posts, or even most of them, just because you signed up, and you can remove yourself from the list at any time). And if you're interested in participating in a more casual manner, or only in commenting, here is the TMST prompt list for the rest of November and the month of December:
- February 24th: Which books are you looking forward to reading this spring? (March-May)
- March 3rd: Which made-up thing do you badly wish was real? (a question I submitted)
- March 10th: If you could have any celebrity be your best friend, who would you pick? (a question I submitted)
- March 17th: Do you prefer single narrator, duet/dual narration, full cast, or "graphic audio" audiobooks?
- March 24th: What’s your go-to coffee/tea order?
- March 31st: What's your favourite colour? (a question I submitted)
I'll be back for the meme on February 24th, with a list of all the spring books that caught my eye!
Now tell me something...is there any book that taught you to see things in a different light?
Like you, I tend to read things that align with what I know/enjoy. That said, I find non-fiction often helps me learn something new. I read a book about the Hiroshima bomb last year that really helped to humanize that event.
ReplyDeleteI admire you for your engaging in nonfiction now and then.
DeleteIt would be nice to do a lot of things at a leisurely pace which sadly, we can't. In this rush-rush world, most of the time is taken to speed-do everything.
ReplyDeleteBlogger holiday sounds good. I think all bloggers need a holiday or two or a couple.
I don't read to educate myself either except for those tutorial books which I don't read often.
I don't remember any book that change my perspective on anything. Well, except maybe those books in animal perspectives - somehow once you read a book in an animal's perspective, you can't see them the same way.
Have a lovely day.
"It would be nice to do a lot of things at a leisurely pace which sadly, we can't."
DeleteI must admit I sometimes go into a reading frenzy (like in these weeks of supposed hiatus...) because I'm afraid I'll never be able to read all the books I want to (and review them...). But I still try to keep it reasonable. It's bad enough that the world requires you to run yourself ragged.
"somehow once you read a book in an animal's perspective, you can't see them the same way"
I never thought of that, but I guess it's true - even if the author is a human, they manage to put you in the animal's shoes (or, well, paws 😂) and have you look at it differently.
Glad to see you back and enjoyed your answers. I am an 80s kid and loved the music but I'm such a music fan that I have favorites from all eras and A LOT from the 70s. I love horror set in winter, and my favorite would be The Shining, which is one of the few books I've read twice. I think the holiday that should be celebrated is National Pet Parent Day. I mean, Mr. Barb and I always get gifts for each other during Mother's/Father's Day from the pups, but I think we should get a paid day off! As for a book that changed my life, I would say The Art of Racing in the Rain. Made me see a new prospective from my canine children.
ReplyDeleteThe Shining is one of the very few King books I've read! I used to find his body horror brand too disturbing, but after the books I've read these latest years, I'm not so sure anymore 😂.
DeleteWho would imagine dogs being such a huge part of your answers, right? 😉 Pet Parent Day would be fun!
I eat pasta very rarely these days because I'm on a low carb diet for my diabetes.
ReplyDeleteI loved the 80's. I was a teenager then too.
I hope things are going well for you. Glad to see you back here even for a little while.
Since I read mostly paranormal romance, I don't really have a book in mind that changed my perspective on anything. Although recently I have been reading more dark romance with some paranormal aspects and some with none. I am kinda liking the masked, stalker dark romance. They're not all abusive towards the female and I do like that. So that has changed a bit. lol
Am I a dark romance girly now? Maybe. lol
Having to eat pasta very rarely sounds like a nightmare...but at least your diet is working miracles!
DeleteYep, we're around the same age...the '80s were wild in the best way!
You blew through those TMST questions! You can read books with snow and ice that aren't seasonal - like Game of Thrones for example! LOL Glad you are still out there. I hope you are well.
ReplyDeleteGame of Thrones isn't something that I would be interested in either (para-historical fiction), but you're right - I guess I've read books set in the winter, only I'm drawing a blank now.
DeleteI'm still here...I don't plan on ever going away! Only taking some time off now and then. Looking forward to reconnecting with all of you 💚.
Welcome back, Roberta! I'm a 70s kid, and I was in college during the 80s so that decade is sort of a blur, lol. I still listen to a lot of 70s rock, since we have a great classic rock radio station here in California.
ReplyDeleteAnd I adore pasta, but my husband was told to go low carb for health reasons, which means I had to go low carb too. Now we only eat pasta occasionally.
"Welcome back, Roberta!"
DeleteThank you!
"Now we only eat pasta occasionally."
Oh the horror LOL.
Yes pure escapism here too.
ReplyDeleteA very much needed breath of fresh air...
DeleteI just saw a thing about how they have stripped the world of color. I was also a teen in the 80s and freely wore obnoxious colored clothing. I am also a BIG 80s music fan. However, in youth, I was obsessed with 1950s sitcoms and wished I had grown up then. Slower paced, family oriented, a kinder, gentler world.
ReplyDelete"freely wore obnoxious colored clothing"
DeleteLOL! I still look for colours, though I'm also a fan of black. I get what you mean about 1950s sitcoms, though what they showed on TV was probably much nicer than the real thing, especially when it comes to women's role in society...
