Back to Black: Introducing the 2019 Halloween Backlist

Hello sweeties, and happy/scary October! 😱

As I did last year, I'm spotlighting four old and/or old-ish books from the dark side this Halloween, one per week till October 31st itself. This is a smart (???) way for me both to cross a handful of books from my to-be-reviewed list and to celebrate the most beloved festivity in the book-blogging world along with my book-blogging friends. I will admit this series didn't get much traction last year (at least in terms of comments), but I'm a stubborn old lady, so I'm at it again 😜. Here's the plan, with dates, titles, authors and genres for each book...

Thu. 10th: The In-Between by Barbara Stewart (Contemporary with a Twist - YA)

Thu. 17th: The Waking Dark by Robin Wasserman (Thriller/Sci-Fi - YA)

Thu. 24th: Imaginary Girls by Nova Ren Suma (Unwalled * - YA)

Thu. 31th: The Blind Mirror by Christopher Pike (Thriller/Sci-Fi/Supernatural - Adult)

* "Unwalled" as in, a mix of genres or something that flat-out breaks the boundaries among them.

Side note: strictly speaking, this isn't a "beat the backlist" series of posts, since I've read all these books already - just never gotten around to reviewing them (or "properly" reviewing them - for some I did minis as soon as I finished them, but I planned on elaborating after a second read). So I'm only beating my review backlist. But honestly, who cares. So, buckle up, hold on tight and prepare for a scare!!! 😁

  1. Hey! I've read Imaginary Girls! Years and years ago... although I didn't really like it, haha. It's been awhile, so I'll look for your review. :)

    1. I guess magical realism isn't your thing 😉. I remember at least another book in the genre that I liked (and reviewed) and you didn't connect with. But maybe you might like The In-Between!

  3. Yay! Looking forward to all your reviews, but especially the Suma and Pike ones, of course! I haven't read The Blind Mirror, so I'm really interested to see what you think of it! 🎃

  4. This might shock you, but I have not read any of these. I feel like I learned something important though, and appreciate you explaining the use of the term "unwalled". Grazie!

    1. Haha, I'm not shocked - it's not like you read creepy books, not that we know of! 😉

Me and my crazy labels 😂. Glad you appreciated the explanation though...Prego!

  5. ooooh I love little series posts like this Roberta!! What a good way to get your review list under control. Mine hovers around 50 books... >.< So I really need to get a handle on mine too.

I also love your word for fusion genres!! Unwalled is such a neat term. ❤️

    1. Haha, thanks! Since I have labeled my category pages as "rooms" (to go with the library theme I used for my whole sidebar), "unwalled" was the best adjective I could use.

  6. Great idea to catch up on some old reviews! Really curious about the in-between being a contemporary with a twist. And also curious about the Pike book- I've read some of his short stories, cbut gotta admit I'm a little scared of reading one of his whole books ;)

    1. I don't think short stories are the thing Pike does better - though it might be because short story as a genre is hardly my jam. I hope I'll be able to get you interested in this particular book because it's really wild! I want everyone to read it LOL (except romance and contemporary lovers of course, or people who don't do horror, because I know they wouldn't enjoy it).

Welcome to Offbeat YA! I love hearing from you and always - I mean always - acknowledge your comments. This used to be a full democracy place, because anyone could comment, regardless of being a registered member of any community. Unfortunately, I had to turn off the Anonymous comment option, because I was getting too much spam that didn't get filtered. So, you’ll need to have a Google account (Gmail will suffice) in order to comment. Sorry about that. Anyway, jump right in! Come on, you know you want to...😉 And be sure to leave a link!
BTW...I don't care if a post is a million months old - you comment, I respond. And you make my day 😃.
Note: this is an award/tag free blog. Sorry I can't accept nominations due to lack of time.
