Tooting Your Trumpet #5

Some people toot their own trumpet. I mean to toot yours. On the first Sunday of every month, I'm sharing your posts, your sites, anything interesting I stumble upon during my internet vagrancies. This month on TYT...
  • READ FOR GRACE (a book challenge on Lauren's blog Bookmark Lit)
  • IS ALL ART FANFICTION? (a discussion post on Rivka's blog The Orangutan Librarian)
  • IN DEFENCE OF GIRLY GIRL GENRES (a discussion post on Rivka's blog - see above)
  • LIBRARY LIFE: PHONE ETIQUETTE (a post on Shayna's blog Clockwork Bibliotheca)

Read for Grace (book challenge) - by Lauren

To honour Grace (Rebel Mommy), a beloved member of the bookish community who lost her battle with cancer in July, Lauren put a simple reading challenge together. On October 14th, Grace's birthday, you just have to read (or start) a book from her TBR list, or one of her favourites. All you need to know about this challenge is explained in Lauren's post that I linked to above. You can also donate to a charity that was close to Grace's heart, if you feel so inclined. Personally, I didn't get the chance to know her, but I know that many of you did and thought of her as a friend, and this would be a great way to keep her memory alive.

Is All Art Fanfiction? (discussion post) - by Rivka

The Orangutan Librarian has an endless stream of thought-provoking, masterfully-articulated opinion pieces/discussion posts - and funny ones, on top of that. This time the blog's owner Rivka asks herself (and us): "Now firmly in the age of reboots, remakes and retellings, [...] where is the line between fanfic and art?"

In Defence of Girly Girl Genres (discussion post) - by Rivka

Did I ever mention that the Orangutan Librarian's blog is the place to go for awesome opinion pieces that double as discussion posts? Oh, right. I just did. (...But did I ever tell you that all the super-fun graphics in her posts are of her own making? Ha! that's new!). This time Rivka wonders why "a lot of women’s fiction and frankly anything aimed at women is treated with derision" and gives her two cents on "masculinised media". I know of at least two other blogs that have highlighted this post (We Live and Breath Books, that also links to Lauren's post above, and Perspective of a Writer), but I already had my TYT installment in place, and anyway...just in case you missed this post the first two times...😉

Library Life: Phone Etiquette (discussion post) - by Shayna

Another installment in Shayna's Library Life series. This time she looks at customer service miscommunications (namely in a library, but really, such things happen everywhere) and not only gives, alas, funny (...I say "alas" because they're also annoying IRL...) examples of them, but also provides easy tips to do the right thing and ease those sometimes painful conversations.

That's all for now folks! See you the first Sunday of every month for more!

    1. It is, isn't it? And it's great to know that we can leave a mark even after not being part of it anymore.

  2. Thanks for including #ReadforGrace even though you didn't know her. XOXO

I really love the idea of reading FOR her and getting to the books she never will. it's sad but somehow fitting.

Fun collection of posts this round and WHO ARE YOU??? There are THREE new posts. I can't even keep up lol

    1. I didn't know her but this is the best the community can offer - friendship and compassion - so I couldn't not to.

LOL, I sometimes have three posts close to each other, then a ten-day void. It depends on which of them are already scheduled and which come up at the last minute, so to speak. I had the Back to Black intro already in place, and I had decided to have a TYT post every first Sunday of the month - then I got the chance to review People of the Lake and I didn't want to do it too close to pub date, since it comes out on the 15th. Sorry if it makes you work too hard hahaha.

Welcome to Offbeat YA! I love hearing from you and always - I mean always - acknowledge your comments. This used to be a full democracy place, because anyone could comment, regardless of being a registered member of any community. Unfortunately, I had to turn off the Anonymous comment option, because I was getting too much spam that didn't get filtered. So, you’ll need to have a Google account (Gmail will suffice) in order to comment. Sorry about that. Anyway, jump right in! Come on, you know you want to...😉 And be sure to leave a link!
BTW...I don't care if a post is a million months old - you comment, I respond. And you make my day 😃.
Note: this is an award/tag free blog. Sorry I can't accept nominations due to lack of time.
