Tell Me Something Tuesday: Are You an Impulsive Book Buyer?

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post on Rainy Day Ramblings, where the blog's owner Heidi discusses a wide range of topics from books to blogging. Weigh in and join the conversation by adding your thoughts in the comments. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog.
Here is what is on deck this week:

ARE YOU AN IMPULSIVE BOOK BUYER?

I'm sure that anyone who knows me a little bit can tell that I'm not 😂. I have a small budget (not only for books, really) and I can't afford buying novels that I'm not reasonably sure I will like...if I can avoid it. I read samples, I read reviews - I research each and every one I'm interested in...to death. Of course, it doesn't always work, but at least I minimise the risks. Sometimes this causes me to collide with unwanted spoilers, but hey, better safe than sorry...I need all the info that I can get before I commit to a book - even a Read Now one on NetGalley!

Well, that's it for now. And if you're interested in participating, here is the TMST prompt list for the month of April:

  • April 7th: Novellas: do you get enough or want more?
  • April 14th: When do you know it’s time to DNF?
  • April 21st: What time periods are you drawn to in books?
  • April 28th: What are some series you started or fell behind on that you would like to pick back up?

I'll be back for the meme on April 21st, but I'll visit all your blogs if you participate in the other rounds.

Now tell me something...do you research the books you buy, or do you buy on a whim?

  1. I am not anymore although I used to be if there was a sale! But only then. Now I have been on a buying ban for about 9 months, and I am going to run until 12 months. Then I just want to buy the books I borrowed from the library that I loved, rather than getting scores of new books where there are some I might not enjoy in the end...

I still take chances on books, but I'm very selective. Your method is very wise! I started to do the same with NG books I enjoyed. Good luck with your ban!

  2. I used to be but there were so many more misses than hits and even if I can afford to buy more books its money down the drain. At some point I can't afford to buy dozens of books I don't enjoy.

My weakness a few years ago were those .99 sale romance tweet links. I am such a sucker for a fun palette cleanser read and the links are too easy and seem like a deal. But same thing - even at .99 - if the majority aren't good it's a waste of money.
And if you aren't paying attention your husband might ask why there are over 30 .99 charges on your credit card bill in one month. Purely hypothetical and not me. (okay -it was me lol) That snapped me out of it real fast!

    1. Cheap ones are surely tempting, but you put 30 of them together and they're not cheap anymore LOL. Especially if you end up not liking them...

  3. I swear! I got an Amazon gift card from my daughter for Christmas, and it is still full. I watch those prices, and read a billion reviews before committing to buying a book. I know I am less likely to read it, if I buy it, so I have to really be sure.

LOL, I thought I was the only one. Also, prices are real. Even ebooks aren't what you would call cheap...

  4. I have never been an impulsive book buyer. Books are just so expensive that if I can get them for free through the library, I will try my best. I pretty much only buy books when I get gift cards for birthdays and holidays. But, sometimes I wish I could just let loose and buy a couple of books once in a while. There’s something special about a brand new book.

    1. There is! Also, for instance, I'm more likely to reread books if they're physical.

  5. As you know, I'm a terrible compulsive book buyer. I had to ban myself from Target for a while because their new paperback releases are always really good. 😂 The bookstore is my version of a religious experience (and I'm very much missing it at the moment), and I also pick up whatever looks interesting from used bookstores, thrift shops, and garage sales. They're starting to take over the house...

    1. Ah, but your tastes are eclectic, so it makes sense that you want to read (almost) EVERYTHING 😂.

  6. Yep. I impulse buy A LOT haha If I like the cover, or I've seen it around the internet a lot, I'll buy it lol Oops

  7. I'm the opposite of impulsive. I live in an apartment with limited storage and I just weeded and reorganized all my bookshelves, so new books have to earn their spot. I am impulsive about the library or requesting on Netgalley!

      Haha - very well said!

  8. I do all that stuff - read reviews, read samples, get as much info about the book before buying a book but that still does not guarantee a good read. But I'm also quite an impulsive buyer because sometimes I just can't resist a book.

Now with reading ebooks, I think I'm even more impulsive because there's no shipping and the books does not up take up shelf space. And also, ebooks seems to be on sale a lot or at least, I got that impression lately. Of course now, I'm an ebook hoarder. Good or bad, I can't decide at the moment but at least I got books.

    Have a lovely day.

Of course there's always the chance for that to happen, but at least one can limit the damage 😉.

Ha! Ebooks are evil! Just kidding. But I suppose it's much easier to be seduced by cheaper books that also have the benefit of not taking space. I wouldn't know because I don't have an ereader, but it makes sense.

  9. I think I may have told you this before when you discussed reading samples of books, but I am not an impulsive book buyer! Like you, I’ve got a small budget so I can’t be buying books that I’m not going to enjoy. To be honest, most books I buy are ones I’ve already read and know that I love and will reread or share with other people.

Since being approved for a few books on NG, I'm doing that too! For instance, I bought a copy of Reverie by Ryan La Sala, and up next is Strange Exit by Parker Peevyhouse.

Being on a small budget sucks, but at least we're (reasonably) sure we're not going to read books we'll hate 😉.

  10. I wish I could be impulsive, haha! The few times I'm impulsive, I'm very selective - they're generally books I've read and loved (bonus points if they're on sale and even more bonus points if they're signed). The ones that I buy that aren't ones I've read are ones that I KNOW I'll likely enjoy (although sometimes that ends up not being the case) or they were found at a deep discount. 😅

    1. Impulsive AND selective is a very interesting combo 👀.

Of course we can't always be SURE, but at least we did our best! And blessed be sales LOL.
