What I Did Last Month: Silent Hiatus Recap & Back to Blogging

Hello sweeties! 💚

I'm here. I'm live. Well...as live as one can be when writing a post in advance LOL. But I mean, this is a new post, not one I scheduled a month or two ago. When I planned my hiatus, on my return I hoped to be able to post the review that started it all - the one that I couldn't seem to write, and that made me realise I needed some blogging-free space. But I finally decided to let it sit for a while longer, so I'm writing this post instead. I hold a grudge to that review LOL. It's not a good idea to force myself to write it now. But while I still have a couple of pre-hiatus posts waiting to go live (May 24th -> Rehabilitating YA: 20 Trope-Free Standalones/Series to Read if You've Given Up on It (Pt.4); May 28th -> TMST: Who Are Some of Your Favourite Authors?), I wanted to do a small recap of what I did last month and give you some heads-up about my future...

HIATUS? WHAT HIATUS?

So...my invisible hiatus has finally come to an end. Except it was a funny hiatus, because after a few non-blogging days, I started to, erm, write the odd blog post again. I wrote and scheduled a couple of TMST posts, one for June, one for July. I even wrote the first post in a still secret new series, and scheduled it for June 2nd. Now, don't get me wrong - I enjoyed not to have commitments (and what's worse...self-imposed ones). I still wasn't in the headspace for reviews, while memes and new post ideas felt fun. But I can't say it was a REAL blogging hiatus, since I had enough posts scheduled to cover its whole length and more, and I was STILL plotting (if not writing) my comeback with a vengeance.

DETACHED MODE(M)

So. As I said, a few days into my hiatus I got restless and started planning/writing more posts. I took a leave of absence the week before Easter. I did a little housekeeping (far less than I should have) and went on a couple of errands out of town. I reread The Outs by E.S. Wesley, and I loved it as much as I did the first two times, two years and a half ago. I blog-hopped...until my modem broke at the end of April, and I had to rely on my station at work to do some net-surfing. Problem was, I had to wait EIGHT WHOLE DAYS for a modem replacement. Plus, on May 1st (Labour Day) and May 4th/5th (a weekend), I was completely isolated, internet-wise, because I only work Monday to Friday and never on the holidays, so I couldn't access the net from my workstation. Picture me internet-less for TWO WHOLE DAYS (plus one). I was losing my mind LOL. And it could have been worse - what if my modem had broken during my leave of absence? A whole week (plus Easter Monday) without a connection...I can't even think about it *shudders*. Well, anyway - while waiting for my new modem, I was able to say hi on Twitter, approve/reply to my own comments, and check on my email and Goodreads account from work, but nothing more...so I'm sorry I couldn't visit/return comments. I hoped to be able to catch up eventually, but I only managed to comment of a few blogs. Time is always a factor...Sorry again everyone 😟. Darnedest modem 😡.

DUTY CASE

At the beginning of May, while still modem-deprived, I started rereading I Crawl Through It by A.S. King. I had already written a mini for it a while ago, but I've finally concocted a "proper" review lately, which will go live on June 6th. (I have to admit I felt a little rusted, or burnt-out, when it came to writing a review...but I hope to get my mojo back). I also got a lovely present from my friend Fanni, but I'll tell you more about it later (just know that it's bookish stuff). And on May 3rd, I got summoned to poll duty (something I've done for a few years now) for the European/local election combo on May 26th. Which means a 3-day job: we do ballot-sheet paperwork on Saturday 25th afternoon, perform actual poll duty on Sunday (7 to 23, after which we count votes for our branch of the European election) and go back to the polling place on Monday at 14 to count the local election votes. Another three days with little to none internet access for me, the very days in which I actually do most of my blogging/visiting...but well, I get a little money from that. VERY little compared to the work involved, but you know - anything helps.

IN FULL SWING

Last but not least...I got my yearly perm on May 11th. Oh, the joy 🎉 🎊 🙌.
So, I guess that's it for now. I intend to revert to full reviewing mode, and I've already started planning lots of stuff - I only hope I'm not overburdening myself. But if it were the case...I could always take another hiatus haha.

  1. You were really busy during your break. Sounds like you were quite productive too. I love AS King's books. I always think she uses magical realism so well. Hope the perm went well. I used to do those, but gave up when I moved to FL (so humid!). Now, I just keep it short. Life without internet seems so painful now. I am worried I will have withdrawal during my cruise in October, but hope I am having too much fun to notice.

    1. I perm my hair once a year, VERY curly. I've done it since I was 16. My curls define me, I couldn't live without them haha.

I'm sure you will! We always miss our people and being up-to-date with things when we don't have access to the net, even briefly - but when you're having a great time, that is probably the last of your concerns LOL.

  2. Glad to have you back! Ugh, the time without internet is brutal - I'm so sorry!
You're right though, sometimes it's just deciding officially that you can let go of your obligations that helps. I've been wondering about taking a hiatus myself as well, but since a lot of my external obligations have lifted, I think my stress will diminish a bit on its own soon.

    1. We are our own worst enemies sometimes! I'm doing it again - scheduling like there's no tomorrow - but for now, I feel like I can manage. You know, I'm curious about your job - I wouldn't mind if you did a series of posts about it *hint hint*.
And kick that stress away! (Eh, I know it's not THAT easy...).

  3. I feel like I'm FINALLY getting my reading and blogging mojo back. Of course, I've had pesky internet issues too. *shakes fist*

And you KNOW as soon as I decide to do one thing - I do the other lol so I get that!! Hahahaha.

    1. Ah, but it was the move's fault this time - not yours! 😉

I'm usually good at following my own rules (the others', not so much 🤣), but there comes a time when one wants to rebel!

  4. I love how you kept blogging and keeping up with social media (as best as you could with the modem problems) during your "break" haha. I hope your break was still fulfilling - after all, you didn't *have to* work on stuff, you just felt like it, which is different, I feel. :) I'm excited about the yet mystery series you mentioned, and of course I can't wait to read your next posts, I do love your content a lot. :)

    1. I HAD to keep up! You know how addictive the internet can be LOL. And yes, I suppose it takes a break to realise you still have that spark in you.

Spoiler: you'll love the first installment in my mystery series! Not because you generally love my content though (bless you! 😘). How's that for a teaser? 😉

  5. Awwh, sorry to hear you were without internet for a while! That's always rough. How would I even fill my free time without blogging and Netflix? Read a lot? DVD binge? ...Go outside? It's so bright out there. 😂

Sounds like you've got a lot of interesting things going on! I'm looking forward to the new secret posts. Very intriguing.

    1. A whole WE without the internet was...hard. Especially since my home problems prevent me from going outside and doing a number of things - so I felt like a caged animal. But not being able to catch up with people and events is probably the worst thing when you have no connection (especially if you did schedule a bunch of posts, so you don't need to worry about your blog!). And at least you have Netflix...

It sounds like everybody's expecting the secret post series to be more exciting than it is LOL.

  6. HELLO ROBERTAAAAAAAAAAA AND GOOD MORNING OR LATE NIGHT. Either way, it will be morning when you crawl out of bed and pop into Blogger seeing this comment. Do you still have the modem still? If you do, I recommend kicking it across the room or out the window... whichever works best. (Sometimes I'm glad I have to rely on my phone hotspot - no modems! Only issue is it says I'm from Kansas and ya girl is very much not from Kansas.)

Looking forward to new, offbeat posts you crank up! More posts for me to intrude on and say GOOD MORNING to. *bangs drums and exits*

    1. It is morning! And the best way to start it is to have you say "have a good one", even if my ears aren't used to been yelled at yet at this early hour 😉. (Joking...it's actually 11 a.m. Though if left to my own devices, I MIGHT be sleeping still).

My new modem works fine, and at least seems to be aware I'm from Italy! 😂

Hehe. Tune in on June 2nd for THAT post...I'm laughing because...😷

Welcome to Offbeat YA! I love hearing from you and always - I mean always - acknowledge your comments. This used to be a full democracy place, because anyone could comment, regardless of being a registered member of any community. Unfortunately, I had to turn off the Anonymous comment option, because I was getting too much spam that didn't get filtered. So, you’ll need to have a Google account (Gmail will suffice) in order to comment. Sorry about that. Anyway, jump right in! Come on, you know you want to...😉 And be sure to leave a link!
BTW...I don't care if a post is a million months old - you comment, I respond. And you make my day 😃.
Note: this is an award/tag free blog. Sorry I can't accept nominations due to lack of time.
