Welcome to Offbeat YA! I love hearing from you and always - I mean always - acknowledge your comments. This used to be a full democracy place, because anyone could comment, regardless of being a registered member of any community. Unfortunately, I had to turn off the Anonymous comment option, because I was getting too much spam that didn't get filtered. So, you’ll need to have a Google account (Gmail will suffice) in order to comment. Sorry about that. Anyway, jump right in! Come on, you know you want to...😉 And be sure to leave a link!
BTW...I don't care if a post is a million months old - you comment, I respond. And you make my day 😃.

I definitely agree, Roberta! I am much more likely to start a new tv show than a new movie. While I do enjoy a good movie now and then, especially those in the MCU, I am much more passionate about tv shows.
ReplyDeleteBut you do like movies at least LOL. Anyhow, there's something about TV seriality...
DeleteThese days, I'm more into tv shows and less movies. But I grew up watching tv, so that might have some influence.
ReplyDeleteWe used to watch shows weekly, each week a new episode but now with internet and all those services, people are having marathons instead of watching an episode a week. I kind of miss doing that even though there is satisfaction in watching a whole season of a show. We in the internet age sort of ruin that part. But I'm not complaining, I'm just saying we no longer enjoy things in small bites and maybe it's why we are always trying to do things quicker.
So I do prefer tv shows or series but I sort of don't like multiple seasons all that often. Sometimes it's just not as good as the first season or sometimes they dragged a storyline out. I know one show keeps adding on the mystery and not give us the answers, even in the end with tv movies, there was still no answers. So I do prefer shows with shorter seasons is what I'm saying.
Have a lovely day.
"We used to watch shows weekly, each week a new episode but now with internet and all those services, people are having marathons instead of watching an episode a week."
DeleteI'm old enough to remember that 😂. Now, even when we watch a show on TV, they air 2 or even 3 (sometimes 4!) episodes at a time...and it ends in a moment...also, we doesn't savour it like we used to.
"we no longer enjoy things in small bites and maybe it's why we are always trying to do things quicker."
Exactly...
Sometimes having multiple seasons does ruin a series, so I get what you're saying...I'm a little sentimental when it comes to series though, so I like them long 😉. And sometimes they get better again (it happened with Supernatural - I didn't particularly care for S.7 and 8, then it started to reach its previous standard).
You know, I used to be the exact opposite- I loved movies, but these days (and especially since the advent of streaming) I LOVE the longer commitment and getting to know story and characters that come with a series. So I agree now. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd come to think of it, I always did like a good serialized show. Even Fantasy Island back when I was a kid. Something about being able to revisit a favorite world every week... and see ongoing stories.
The older we get, the more alike we become? 😉
DeleteI love the word "commitment". It fits!
I appreciate your very thoughtful explanation, but I am for neither. I have not watched TV since 2019, and the last movie I saw was Love, Simon. I go to the theatre, it's dark, I fall asleep, and end up missing part of every movie. I just don't bother now.
ReplyDelete"I have not watched TV since 2019"
Delete😮
"I go to the theatre, it's dark, I fall asleep, and end up missing part of every movie."
Oops 😂.
Anyhow...you work long hours, read a ton, blog almost every day...I don't think you could fit more stuff into your daily routine!
I'm not the biggest movie person, but I'm not quite as against them as you. But I completely get what you mean about it being such a short time to form connections. Even some of my favorites, I'm still a little disappointed that it was so short because I know it could've been better if there'd been more time to explore more in depth. Though I think sometimes it actually can be the perfect length, depending on the story.
ReplyDelete"Though I think sometimes it actually can be the perfect length, depending on the story."
DeleteI'm sure it must be...or movies wouldn't even exist...but I feel about them the same way I feel about short stories (though I can enjoy some novellas a lot). That said, of course movies are valid! And I'm not even sure it's just a matter of length...they use a different kind of storytelling regardless. Though series have become more cinematic over the years.
I like everything but it takes effort for me to get going on either lol I'm much more likely to watch Bob's Burgers, Big Bang Theory or whatever is on every night in syndication for the 1000th time because I'm lazy.
ReplyDeleteIf you get me started on something though, I'm good.
But other than the lazy kind of re-watch above - I don't re-watch anything. I'm a one and done lol & I like series to be 3-4 seasons max or else I get bored and quit.

LOL, I knew. Polar opposites as always 😂. And you only watch the Law...not the Order 😉.
DeleteOh yes, if you count watching 1/2 episodes then... lol
DeleteI enjoy both too. I read romance and love PNR but I don't like watching romance in either movies or tv shows. For tv shows and movies I like to watch horror movies or horror related or scary type tv shows, like Supernatural, Lucifer, Dracula, Criminal Minds, and Haven.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how your interests vary from book to movie/series! I loved Supernatural (though I'm not crazy about the ending), watched a lot of Criminal Minds (though my heart can't take my boy Reed prison arc, so I skipped that season) and used to watch Haven, except the last 2 seasons never got dubbed, so I've never seen them! But one day I'll try the version with subtitles that some fans have made.
DeleteI personally enjoy both movies and TV shows. Though I do agree with you, that it is very hard to present or adapt a story in such a short period of time (i.e. a couple hours) well. Though, I have seen some very good examples of that, and also...some bad ones.
ReplyDeleteFor me, I have TV shows and movies that I love coming back to and rewatching because I love the characters in them and the worlds.
Star Trek: Next Generation was (and is still is) my favorite TV show, and I come back to it to witness my characters going on a vast assortment of adventures. However, with movies, there is something about the characters and stories that make me rewatch them, even though I am with the characters for a shorter period of time. One movie that I think captured characters and a Fantasy world well in a short period of time was Jim Hensons's Dark Crystal . Though, we didn't get to see all the world, the audience has a strong connection to it. :D
Also regarding TV shows, one of the best book to screen adaptations I've seen was actually a TV show adaptation. Which was the TV series Good Omens . The book I feel was too dense (plot and character wise) to make it a movie, so making it a TV show was a good choice. :)
Anyway, I enjoyed reading your post.
-Quinley
Oooh, if you liked Dark Crystal you will probably love the book The Shadow Glass by Josh Winning, which I reviewed earlier this year! And I haven't read Good Omens yet, but I've watched the TV adaptation (because of course, David Tennant 🥰 😂), and I found it lovely, but probably I'm biased 😂. Seriously though, it was very well done, and David's chemistry with Michael Sheen was everything.
DeleteThat's interesting Roberta. I don't know that I've ever talked with someone who flat out doesn't enjoy movies. I like both. I don't go to the theater all that often, but I do watch movies on TV. I tend to watch movies on the weekends, when I can spend the time getting invested in the story. I also love series, but with streaming, I tend to binge them, which ends up taking more time than movies! Overall, I enjoy both.
ReplyDelete"I don't know that I've ever talked with someone who flat out doesn't enjoy movies."
DeleteFor real?!?
Yeah, movies clock around a couple of hours, so you have to make sure you can watch the whole thing. Which is another problem I have - having to stand still for so long bores me (while it doesn't when I'm in front of my computer, because reading and writing and browsing are more immersive activities).
I completely understand where you're coming from. I do, however, LOVE movies. I'm a movie junkie. And, I get what you're saying about the story not being long enough and the movies being so long it's hard not to fidget.
ReplyDeleteI also love tv series. Like you, I love spending years with my favorite characters and being excited for new seasons. I also love binge watching old episodes.
Great answer! And, thanks for stopping by my blog.
You get the best of two worlds 😉.
DeleteGlad you're back in the game and I got the chance to reconnect with you!
This is 100% my EXACT thoughts on this topic! I just never warmed up to movies either, and the few that I do like are usually series, or based on a book or story. I feel you, I can't devote two hours to a world, and then have that be it. I just can't care that fast!
ReplyDeleteYay! I thought I was the black sheep LOL.
