Tell Me Something Tuesday: Do You Prefer Movies or TV Series?

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly meme created by Heidi at Rainy Day Ramblings in order to discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging (and some slightly more personal matters throw in for good measure). After Heidi stopped blogging (apparently for good), five of us took over as hosts while providing new questions. The current team is composed of Berls at Because Reading Is Better Than Real LifeJen at That's What I'm Talking AboutKaren at For What It's WorthLinda at Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell and Roberta at Offbeat YA. This week's question is...

DO YOU PREFER MOVIES OR TV SERIES?

I don't like movies. I've seen a very small number of them in 55 years, most of which only because someone asked me to accompany them to the cinema and I obliged. As a rule, they leave me cold. I can't commit to a story that starts and ends in the space of a couple of hours at best (then again, if forced to watch something without a break for that length of time, I would fidget...unless it's a Law & Order marathon 😂) And though I'm very much a sci-fi gal, so that one might think I would be willing to make an exception for movies in that genre, that's not the case - I don't even like the over-the-top special effects that come with some of them.

Now, TV series are my jam. I love to be able to explore a world and get attached to its characters. I love to be able to return to them and follow them for years. I love that the single episodes are short, but I can commit to them as a unit. I'd rather rewatch an installment in a series that I know by heart than watch a movie that I've never seen...🤷‍♀️

Well, that's it for now. Did you enjoy this post? Would you like to participate in the meme on a regular or semi-regular basis, and get emailed the prompt list? Just head over here and fill in Jen's form! (Of course, you can jump in anytime you like - you are under no obligation to actually do all the posts, or even most of them, just because you signed up, and you can remove yourself from the list at any time). And if you're interested in participating in a more casual manner, or only in commenting, here is the TMST prompt list for the month of August:

  • August 2nd: What is/are your favourite post/s from your blog?
  • August 9th: Do you read middle grade books? Why or why not? (a question I submitted)
  • August 16th: What do your family and friends think of your blogging?
  • August 23th: Does length of series matter for you when you are picking out books to read?
  • August 30th: Which books are you looking forward to reading this fall? (September-November)

I'll be back for the meme on August 30th, since the next month is already too packed (blog-wise) for my standards - it pains me, because I'm loving pretty much every one of these questions, but I can't make the time...not if I want to churn out a few reviews and move on with my reading. Which reminds me - look out for my Aug. 1st post, because I squeezed a last-minute review into my routine, for a series finale that's coming out sooner than I expected!

Now tell me something...are you a movie buff or a series junkie?

  1. I definitely agree, Roberta! I am much more likely to start a new tv show than a new movie. While I do enjoy a good movie now and then, especially those in the MCU, I am much more passionate about tv shows.

    1. But you do like movies at least LOL. Anyhow, there's something about TV seriality...

  2. These days, I'm more into tv shows and less movies. But I grew up watching tv, so that might have some influence.

We used to watch shows weekly, each week a new episode but now with internet and all those services, people are having marathons instead of watching an episode a week. I kind of miss doing that even though there is satisfaction in watching a whole season of a show. We in the internet age sort of ruin that part. But I'm not complaining, I'm just saying we no longer enjoy things in small bites and maybe it's why we are always trying to do things quicker.

So I do prefer tv shows or series but I sort of don't like multiple seasons all that often. Sometimes it's just not as good as the first season or sometimes they dragged a storyline out. I know one show keeps adding on the mystery and not give us the answers, even in the end with tv movies, there was still no answers. So I do prefer shows with shorter seasons is what I'm saying.

    Have a lovely day.

I'm old enough to remember that 😂. Now, even when we watch a show on TV, they air 2 or even 3 (sometimes 4!) episodes at a time...and it ends in a moment...also, we doesn't savour it like we used to.

"we no longer enjoy things in small bites and maybe it's why we are always trying to do things quicker."
      Exactly...

Sometimes having multiple seasons does ruin a series, so I get what you're saying...I'm a little sentimental when it comes to series though, so I like them long 😉. And sometimes they get better again (it happened with Supernatural - I didn't particularly care for S.7 and 8, then it started to reach its previous standard).

  3. You know, I used to be the exact opposite- I loved movies, but these days (and especially since the advent of streaming) I LOVE the longer commitment and getting to know story and characters that come with a series. So I agree now. :)

And come to think of it, I always did like a good serialized show. Even Fantasy Island back when I was a kid. Something about being able to revisit a favorite world every week... and see ongoing stories.

    1. The older we get, the more alike we become? 😉

I love the word "commitment". It fits!

  4. I appreciate your very thoughtful explanation, but I am for neither. I have not watched TV since 2019, and the last movie I saw was Love, Simon. I go to the theatre, it's dark, I fall asleep, and end up missing part of every movie. I just don't bother now.

      Oops 😂.

Anyhow...you work long hours, read a ton, blog almost every day...I don't think you could fit more stuff into your daily routine!

  5. I'm not the biggest movie person, but I'm not quite as against them as you. But I completely get what you mean about it being such a short time to form connections. Even some of my favorites, I'm still a little disappointed that it was so short because I know it could've been better if there'd been more time to explore more in depth. Though I think sometimes it actually can be the perfect length, depending on the story.

I'm sure it must be...or movies wouldn't even exist...but I feel about them the same way I feel about short stories (though I can enjoy some novellas a lot). That said, of course movies are valid! And I'm not even sure it's just a matter of length...they use a different kind of storytelling regardless. Though series have become more cinematic over the years.

  6. I like everything but it takes effort for me to get going on either lol I'm much more likely to watch Bob's Burgers, Big Bang Theory or whatever is on every night in syndication for the 1000th time because I'm lazy.
If you get me started on something though, I'm good.
But other than the lazy kind of re-watch above - I don't re-watch anything. I'm a one and done lol & I like series to be 3-4 seasons max or else I get bored and quit.

  7. I enjoy both too. I read romance and love PNR but I don't like watching romance in either movies or tv shows. For tv shows and movies I like to watch horror movies or horror related or scary type tv shows, like Supernatural, Lucifer, Dracula, Criminal Minds, and Haven.

    1. It's funny how your interests vary from book to movie/series! I loved Supernatural (though I'm not crazy about the ending), watched a lot of Criminal Minds (though my heart can't take my boy Reed prison arc, so I skipped that season) and used to watch Haven, except the last 2 seasons never got dubbed, so I've never seen them! But one day I'll try the version with subtitles that some fans have made.

  8. I personally enjoy both movies and TV shows. Though I do agree with you, that it is very hard to present or adapt a story in such a short period of time (i.e. a couple hours) well. Though, I have seen some very good examples of that, and also...some bad ones.

For me, I have TV shows and movies that I love coming back to and rewatching because I love the characters in them and the worlds.
Star Trek: Next Generation was (and is still is) my favorite TV show, and I come back to it to witness my characters going on a vast assortment of adventures. However, with movies, there is something about the characters and stories that make me rewatch them, even though I am with the characters for a shorter period of time. One movie that I think captured characters and a Fantasy world well in a short period of time was Jim Hensons's Dark Crystal . Though, we didn't get to see all the world, the audience has a strong connection to it. :D

Also regarding TV shows, one of the best book to screen adaptations I've seen was actually a TV show adaptation. Which was the TV series Good Omens . The book I feel was too dense (plot and character wise) to make it a movie, so making it a TV show was a good choice. :)

Anyway, I enjoyed reading your post.

    1. Oooh, if you liked Dark Crystal you will probably love the book The Shadow Glass by Josh Winning, which I reviewed earlier this year! And I haven't read Good Omens yet, but I've watched the TV adaptation (because of course, David Tennant 🥰 😂), and I found it lovely, but probably I'm biased 😂. Seriously though, it was very well done, and David's chemistry with Michael Sheen was everything.

  9. That's interesting Roberta. I don't know that I've ever talked with someone who flat out doesn't enjoy movies. I like both. I don't go to the theater all that often, but I do watch movies on TV. I tend to watch movies on the weekends, when I can spend the time getting invested in the story. I also love series, but with streaming, I tend to binge them, which ends up taking more time than movies! Overall, I enjoy both.

      For real?!?

Yeah, movies clock around a couple of hours, so you have to make sure you can watch the whole thing. Which is another problem I have - having to stand still for so long bores me (while it doesn't when I'm in front of my computer, because reading and writing and browsing are more immersive activities).

  10. I completely understand where you're coming from. I do, however, LOVE movies. I'm a movie junkie. And, I get what you're saying about the story not being long enough and the movies being so long it's hard not to fidget.

I also love tv series. Like you, I love spending years with my favorite characters and being excited for new seasons. I also love binge watching old episodes.

Great answer! And, thanks for stopping by my blog.

  11. This is 100% my EXACT thoughts on this topic! I just never warmed up to movies either, and the few that I do like are usually series, or based on a book or story. I feel you, I can't devote two hours to a world, and then have that be it. I just can't care that fast!
