Tell Me Something Tuesday: Do You Ever Buy Physical Copies of Your NetGalley/Edelweiss Approvals?

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly meme created by Heidi at Rainy Day Ramblings in order to discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging (and some slightly more personal matters throw in for good measure). While Heidi is on an extended hiatus, there are five of us who are hosting it and providing the questions. The current team is composed of Berls at Because Reading Is Better Than Real LifeJen at That's What I'm Talking AboutKaren at For What It's WorthLinda at Book Girl of Mur-y-Castell and Roberta at Offbeat YA. This week's question is...

DO YOU EVER BUY PHYSICAL COPIES OF YOUR NETGALLEY/EDELWEISS APPROVALS?

For the books I REALLY enjoyed - 4 to 5 stars - and the publisher didn't provide a download copy of (as opposed to a temporary reading file), absolutely. So far I've bought Reverie by Ryan LaSala and Strange Exit by Parker Peevyhouse, and I plan on buying Angel of the Overpass by Seanan McGuire and Dead Space by Kali Wallace. If it's a book that the publisher kindly provided with no strings attached (I've been blessed with a number of those), I don't necessarily buy a physical copy, because hey, I'm not that rich 😉 - plus I wouldn't even have space enough. But I cherish the ecopy that I got and I keep it saved on a pendrive (two, actually. I'm taking no chances LOL). Anyhow, I have two reasons for buying...I plan on revisiting the book later and I want to support the author.  Win-win!

Well, that's it for now. Did you enjoy this post? Would you like to participate in the meme on a regular or semi-regular basis, and get emailed the prompt list? Just head over here and fill in Jen's form! (Of course, you can jump in anytime you like - you are under no obligation to actually do all the posts, or even most of them, just because you signed up, and you can remove yourself from the list at any time). And if you're interested in participating in a more casual manner, or only in commenting, here is the TMST prompt list for the rest of August and the month of September:

  • August 24th: Do you have any pets? Tell us about them (past or present)
  • August 31st: What books are you looking forward to reading in Fall 2021? (September-November)
  • September 7th: Libraries... do you use yours?
  • September 14th: When does it become too late to comment on a blog post?
  • September 21st: Have you ever bought a book just because you fell in love with the cover? And did such book live up to it? (a question I submitted)
  • September 28th: Do you read 1 book at a time? or multiple?

This was my last post for the time being, since I'm taking a blog hiatus! I'll be back on September 6th - and my next TMST post will be on the 14th - but of course I'll visit your blogs in the meantime. (To be precise, my month-long hiatus already took place in real life, in between June and July...that's why I haven't got any posts scheduled until the 6th. Right now I'm working on my post-hiatus posts. Yeah, I'm complicated 😝).

Now tell me something...do you ever buy copies of your review books for your collection, even if you have already read them?

  1. I don't get books for review but if I really love a book and want to re-read it and support the author, I would buy a physical/paper copy. As I mostly read ebooks, I don't buy as many paper books. I have to truly love the book to do that as like you, I don't have the space to put them.

Isn't scheduling posts wonderful? Although I don't do any scheduled posts because I can never decide ahead of time what to post. It's good that you have a use for it. I still admired your scheduling skills because I can't do it.

    Have a lovely day.

    1. But ebooks count! Buying ebooks too! Of course the physical copy gives you a different thrill, but ebooks are absolutely valid, and a great way to save space and trees.

Thank you! Scheduling posts isn't for everyone - I know of people who will rebel against their own schedule if they try one LOL. Other become anxious at the thought of committing to writing a certain post on a certain day...while it's the other way around for me - I get anxious if I don't have anything planned. It looks like your method works for you, and that's what counts!

  2. I don't request on Netgalley anymore, but I can answer this question from the perspective of a digital library user: I don't ever buy physical copies if I've already read the book in a digital form. I just find it to be a waste of money. The book could be awesome, but I rarely buy already read books.

    1. Well, libraries are still a valid method to support authors! I wouldn't have expected that from a bookworm though LOL. Then again, some of us never - or hardly - revisit books.

  3. I used to buy more when I re-read a lot. I had to get rid of sooooo many books when I moved that I have no desire to have that many again. Not that I plan on moving but...lol

My reading is so weird this year that I don't have favorite authors or genres or anything. It's just been me trying things out on audio, from the library or my existing tbr shelf.

    1. Yep, I understand that there's no point in buying if you don't plan on rereading (but seriously, do your best to never move again! I think the latest ordeal will last you a lifetime LOL. Plus, Figgy wouldn't approve of it 😂).

  4. I buy copies of NetGalley reads sometimes, in fact I recently bought Dead Space because it was a 5 star read for me and I HAD to have a copy!😁

  5. I hardly buy any books and I don't re-read, so this is a no for me.

  6. Back when I used to get physical ARCs and had a bookshelf, I would buy finished copies of favorite series/authors. Now, I'm 100% digital. I do like to get the audiobook sometimes, especially if I like the narrator.

    1. I realised that I should have phrased my question so as to include ebooks and audiobooks as well. I mean, when those eARCS expire, one can always buy the ebook/audiobook instead of the paper version. It's still a permanent copy you get!

  7. No, I don't because I've run out of room in my little apartment for anymore books. lol

    1. That's always a factor, isn't it? 😥

  8. Same here. I don't actually buy that many physical books anymore- but if I really like or just want to support the author I will.

    1. I don't know if you buy those, but ebooks/audiobooks count too. I didn't even think to add them because I only buy paper LOL. Self-centered 😂.

    2. I guess e-books means I buy a few more. Weird though that even my e- book buying is down lately. Reading slump I guess. although I did read a book this week- yay me.

    3. It's the Olympics withdrawal, I'm sure 😉.

  9. I don't request or accept review copies anymore, but when I did I absolutely bought the physical copy when I loved the book and wanted to have it on my shelf either because I knew I would reread it or because I wanted to support the author. :D Great post!

    1. You are one of the few people I know that reread...except me of course 😉.

  10. I don't request ARCs. I take my time when I read and ARCs it feel like there a time limit to read the book and review it.

    1. That's a valid concern, especially if one requests a bunch of ARCs thinking "I can't possibly get approved for all of them anyway, but it doesn't hurt to try" and then they find themselves buried under approvals LOL. And I understand pressure. I'm like you - I take my time and read thoroughly - but since I request very few books, I can handle them.

  11. I'm about the same. I don't buy a lot of books, especially new-to-me books. If I buy a book it's because I gave the review copy 4.5 stars or 5 stars!

    1. You're stricter than me LOL - I also buy the 4-star ones.

  12. Sometimes! Not often, because money, but if I really loved it I do. And, often I will buy one for my mom to read, and then she gives it back to me because she hates keeping books, so that is a way I get around it- if it is a gift, it doesn't make me feel as bad 😂

  13. I seldom buy books I've already read. It has to be really amazing for me to do that. But it does happen from time to time!
